Next-Level Healthcare in Elko: Convergence Health Leads the Way

This month, the Elko Area Chamber is proud to spotlight Convergence Health—formerly Elko Community Health Center—a dedicated healthcare facility that has been transforming access to medical care in our region. A Chamber member since 2021, Convergence Health is committed to meeting the needs of rural communities with compassion, innovation, and expertise.

A Mission to Make a Difference, Close to Home

What drives Convergence Health is simple but powerful: making a real difference in the lives of the people in our community. “In rural areas, access to care can be limited—but we’re here to change that,” says Claire Jensen, Business Development Specialist and Registered Nurse. “Whether it’s helping someone avoid a long drive for surgery or chemotherapy, catching a diagnosis early, or simply being a familiar face when someone walks through our doors—that’s what drives us.” Many of their providers are Elko locals, and others travel to the area because they are passionate about rural healthcare. Together, they are building a system that allows residents to stay close to home without sacrificing quality care.

Strengthening Community Connections Through the Chamber

As a relatively new organization—and one that recently rebranded—Convergence Health values the connections built through the Chamber. “The Chamber of Commerce plays an important role in helping us stay connected to the community we serve,” Jensen explains. “Through events like Ribbon Cuttings, Business Before/After Hours, and other local activities, we’ve been able to introduce our services and share important health resources.” This visibility has helped spread awareness of their updated name and expanded services, while reinforcing their role as a trusted healthcare partner in the region.

Local Care, Cutting Edge Treatment

An interesting fact about Convergence Health is how deeply embedded their care team is in the local community. “Our nurses, front desk staff, billing, surgical staff, and medical assistants live right here,” Jensen notes. “Even many of the investors in our Surgery Center are Elko residents.” While many rural residents have historically traveled out of town—or out of state—for advanced care, Convergence Health is reversing that trend. Their facility now brings in the same high-level providers to Elko, offering innovative treatment options through their Surgery Center, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and Cancer Center.

Chamber Checks & Community Support

While Convergence Health does not currently accept Chamber Checks due to insurance and billing regulations, they continue to support the Chamber’s mission to strengthen local businesses. “We often include Chamber Checks in our raffle prizes at community events,” Jensen says, showcasing their ongoing commitment to supporting the broader local economy in creative ways.

Nature's Classroom: Nevada Outdoor School Inspires Adventure and Learning

This month, the Elko Area Chamber proudly shines the spotlight on Nevada Outdoor School (NOS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship through outdoor education. Established in Winnemucca in 2002 and expanding to Elko in 2016, NOS has been a valued Chamber member since 2017.

A Mission to Get Everyone Outdoors

At the heart of NOS is a simple but powerful belief: the more time people spend outdoors, the more they’ll learn to appreciate and care for the natural world. “At NOS, we are committed to increasing everyone’s time spent outdoors,” shares Executive Director Melanie Erquiaga. “The more people experience nature, the more they’ll want to learn about it, love it, and return to it… and the cycle continues!” Their programming emphasizes hands-on learning, outdoor ethics, and access to nature for youth and families across rural northern Nevada.

Partnering with the Chamber & the Community

NOS values its relationship with the Elko Area Chamber as a way to connect with the local community. “The Chamber provides NOS an opportunity to speak with the community,” Erquiaga says. “This last summer, through Business Before Hours meetings, members of the community enrolled their kids in summer camps through our scholarship program—helping increase local youth’s time spent outdoors in Elko County!”

National Recognition for Local Impact

An inspiring highlight in NOS’s journey came in March 2014, when they were recognized in Washington, D.C. as a White House Champion of Change for their work reconnecting young people with nature—an honor that reflects the importance of their mission on both a local and national scale.

Chamber Checks & Community Access

While NOS does not currently accept Chamber Checks as payment for services, they are gladly accepted as donations to support programming needs such as supplies and travel expenses. Most of NOS’s offerings remain free to the public, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to experiencing the outdoors.

Engage authentically, support local causes, and collaborate with other businesses. More Than a Service: Elko United Methodist Fellowship Builds Community One Sunday at a Time

Meeting weekly at 777 Sage Street, inside the Episcopal Church building, this small but impactful gathering oﬀers a safe and welcoming space for anyone seeking encouragement and deeper spiritual understanding.

A Mission of Connection & Compassion:

The group was founded in response to a growing need for emotional and social support within the community. Recent studies show that Nevada is the loneliest state in the country, with 77% of adults rarely participating in group activities and nearly half reporting a lack of needed emotional support. With this in mind, Judith Donaldson and her group are committed to providing a place where individuals can feel heard, valued, and spiritually enriched. “We come together each week not only to worship and study, but to grow, laugh, serve, and support one another,” Judith shares.

Welcomed by the Community:

Held every Sunday at 11 a.m., the group welcomes newcomers with open arms. Whether you're looking for a sense of belonging, a stronger spiritual foundation, or simply a place to feel encouraged, this fellowship oﬀers something meaningful. “Our goal is to get closer to God through mutual understanding, prayer, and friendship,” Judith adds.

L.A.S.S.O.: Harnessing Hope for Elko’s Animals

This month, the Elko Area Chamber proudly shines the spotlight on L.A.S.S.O. (Local Animal Shelter Support Organization), a private fundraising entity dedicated to supporting the Elko Animal Shelter. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, L.A.S.S.O. has been instrumental in raising funds to establish and sustain the Dumke/Weeks Spay/Neuter Clinic through private grants, donations, and bequests. Notably, the L.A.S.S.O. Board operates without any paid staff, underscoring its volunteer-driven mission.

Motivation:
L.A.S.S.O. is committed to eliminating animal overpopulation and euthanasia through its spay/neuter programs for animals adopted from the Elko Animal Shelter. Additionally, the organization promotes animal welfare projects to create a compassionate community for pets and their owners. A growing concern about animal overpopulation and rising euthanasia rates led a group of dedicated citizens, including veterinarian Dr. Jack O. Walther, City Manager Curtis Calder, Elko Animal Shelter Manager Karen Walther, attorney Grant Gerber, and L.A.S.S.O. President Vivian Wright, to take action.

Chamber Partnership:

L.A.S.S.O. values its partnership with the Elko Area Chamber, which has helped publicly thank donors, animal adopters, rescue and foster groups, and raise awareness about the Elko Animal Shelter’s dedicated staff and the L.A.S.S.O. Board.

Accomplishments & Successful Outcomes:

L.A.S.S.O.’s efforts have resulted in the creation of a fully operational spay/neuter facility, featuring:

- Two fully equipped surgery rooms and a recovery room with kennels

- Separate isolation kennels, medical supply storage, and a consulting room

- A public intake lobby, manager’s office, employee breakroom, and restroom

Beyond the clinic, L.A.S.S.O. also remodeled the original kennel building, increasing the cat kennels from 4 to 18 and enhancing dog kennels. They added outdoor exercise yards, a humane holding area for vulnerable animals, outdoor isolation kennels, security fencing, and a security system.

- Over 8,000 shelter animals have been spayed or neutered.

- In 2023 and 2024, the Elko Animal Shelter achieved a “No Kill” status by significantly reducing euthanasia rates.

- In 2024 alone, 1,854 animals were adopted or returned to their owners.
